Castel Del Monte
Of the many medieval towns in Abruzzo, one of the most picturesque is perhaps Castel Del Monte. This medieval hill town with Renaissance influences is located about 20 km from the mountain property. While the first evidence of human settlement are artefacts from the 11th century B.C. discovered in the valley beneath the town, the first recorded mention of Castellum Del Monte (the Latin name of Castel Del Monte) came in 1223 in a papal bull by Pope Honorius III.
In Castel Del Monte one may see also the influence the Medicis, because it belonged to the Baronage of Carapelle. The Medicis governed the baronage for over a century-and-a-half and many of the buildings where constructed during their reign. For example, Chiesa "Matrice" di San Marco from 1657, is one of the most notable contribution of the Medici. The church tall tower is also the most prominent feature of Castel Del Monte.
