Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso e dei Monti della Laga
Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park (Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso e dei Monti della Laga), where the mountain property is located, is one of the largest protected areas in Europe. It also holds the highest mountains, not only of Abruzzo, but of the Apennines too. The highest summit of Gran Sasso is Corno Grande (2.912 m), from where there is a view to both the Adriatic and the Tyrrhenian (Mediterranean) Seas. Near the summit, there is a hotel where the Italian fascist dictator Benito Mussolini was imprisoned from August until September 1943 when he was freed by a Nazi commando operation.
